Pave the [permeable] way

Embed the site into the house.

Striving to making the architecture feel embedded into the site, this meant moving the site into the house! In this project, the existing farmhouse is being expanded and converted into a contemporary farmhouse with all its rustic glamour. But with the expansion landing 5’ above the existing grade, there was an evident disconnect with the land. The solution became raising the grade 2 feet with imported gravel & native soil fill on the front and side yards of the house. The front entrance called for a terraced landscape, and a raised courtyard composed of gravel fill. On the back side of the house, the magnificent oaks called for a simple framing granite walkway with potted plants, with unimpeded views to the forest. The side yard is where the resort feel is achieved, as the architectural addition opens up views of a trough fountain and a 40’ rectangular pool with a framing lawn.
